Kaltura CaptureSpace enables easy capture everywhere: in class, at home or on-the-go, with automated publishing and interactive viewing within all leading Learning Management Systems and Kaltura’s MediaSpace video portal.
Company and launch partners introduce a new open standard for capture interoperability.
Kaltura, the leading open source video platform (www.kaltura.com), whose open system is deployed in hundreds of educational institutions announced today the launch of Kaltura CaptureSpace, its new lecture capture solution.
Kaltura’s CaptureSpace product will be presented for the first time at Kaltura Connect 2014 – The Video Experience Conference, taking place in New York City on June 16-18, and will be available for commercial use for the Fall 2014 semester. Tune in to the live stream of Kaltura Connect at https://connect.kaltura.com/live.
The new capture solution allows faculty, students, and instructional designers to easily create multi-source video recordings in-class, at home or on the go, and automatically upload the videos to the Kaltura Platform, making them available for publishing in all leading Learning Management Systems and in Kaltura’s MediaSpace video portal. Kaltura’s open source video player now supports multi-device publishing of synchronized videos and slides that are captured by CaptureSpace or by other third party lecture capture products. Kaltura’s automated metadata extraction, editing and chaptering tools also facilitate deep search and effective utilization of the captured content which, when combined with in-player quizzing, enable immediate assessment of learning outcomes.
The content that is produced via Kaltura CaptureSpace on PCs, mobile or tablets can be natively managed in the Kaltura Management Console (KMC), which already manages media for many hundreds of campuses and K12 institutions worldwide. The new Capture and synchronized playback capabilities are now available for these institutions along with Kaltura’s support for live events, alumni outreach, course material for teaching and learning, media based student assignments, training videos, video demonstrations, and the management and playback of licensed content.
In line with its steadfast commitment to openness and collaboration, Kaltura is launching an Open Capture Standard in conjunction with the launch of CaptureSpace. The standard provides an easy interface for any lecture capture solution to push its video recordings into the Kaltura platform to benefit from its ingestion, publishing and playback capabilities. Leveraging the standard will allow institutions to consolidate all of their captured content into one location, enabling effective discovery and reuse of content across the institution, transcending departments, schools and semesters. Much like what IMS’s Common Cartridge did for the Learning Management market, the standard assures long term interoperability with other capture solutions that comply with the standard. Already supporting the Open Capture Standard are several lecture capture solution providers, including Collaaj, Winnov, Cattura, and TechSmith. Kaltura is extending an invitation to all providers of Lecture Capture technologies to endorse the standard and to enable their customers to maximize their choices and options, and enjoy flexibility and interoperability.
“Educational Institutions capture an enormous amount of lecture data, but then put it to limited use because it is stored in silos and accessed in parts by disparate systems that do not connect with each other,” said Ron Yekutiel, Kaltura Co-founder, Chairman and CEO. “Staying true to our core values of openness, flexibility, and collaboration, we are advocating for a new Open Capture Standard that would promote interoperability between different video capturing and publishing tools, and as a result empower organizations to have more freedom and make the most out of their content. This initiative comes on the heels of other successful undertakings, like HTML5Video.org and OpenVideoAlliance.org, in which Kaltura pioneered and led an open and collaborative alternative to an incumbent walled-garden approach.”
