Kaltura (www.kaltura.com), provider of the leading video technology platform, today published its second annual State of Video in Education report, a comprehensive international study that examines the evolving use of video in education. Over 1,200 respondents undertook the online survey in April 2015, more than double 2014’s responses.
Key findings include a considerable gap between student and teacher digital literacy levels, indicating that many teachers will need to enhance their skills to keep pace with students. The survey also demonstrates that the pervasiveness and democratization of video in education are now irrefutable. According to almost all respondents, teachers and students now create their own custom videos in addition to using free or licensed content. Furthermore, two thirds of institutions incorporate video in student assignments.
One particular area of interest for the education community is the ideal length of time for educational video content. Respondents overwhelmingly consider ten minutes or under as optimal (71%), which may be a reflection of students’ desire for shorter YouTube-length content. However, 28% of the educators questioned single out 10-30 minutes as the optimal length, perhaps influenced by the popularity of the 18-minute TED video format. This insight is important as organizations design the most effective support models and pedagogical practices for outcomes improvement.
Respondents included educators, instructional designers, IT professionals, digital media professionals, senior administrators and students from around the globe. Around two thirds were drawn from higher education and a quarter from K-12 institutions.
