How Mayo Clinic uses video and AI to innovate healthcare delivery

Curious about how AI can supercharge your healthcare practice or institution? Discover how it can craft immersive experiences, shape data-driven strategies for growth, and elevate your healthcare provider and patient experience to the next level. Dive into this case study where Mayo Clinic uses video and AI to revolutionize patient care, streamline healthcare processes, and spark innovation.

Democratizing access to video

Jodie Bartz, Senior Business Analyst at Mayo Foundation for Medical Education, and her small but mighty Streaming Media team launched a game-changing initiative allowing every employee to upload videos to a centralized video hub. The result? A flood of creativity, with around 4,500 videos added to Mayo Clinic’s internal portal every month. These videos are used for everything from internal communication and training for medical personnel to patient education and care.

One of the coolest applications to date is using QR codes on rarely used equipment, linking directly to training videos that offer instant guidance. This clever hack increases staff competency and thus patient safety. By tapping into the creativity and expertise of the entire team, Mayo Clinic ensures that valuable information is always just a click (or scan) away.

Enhancing patient experience with telehealth and remote monitoring

The COVID-19 pandemic fast-tracked telehealth and remote monitoring at Mayo Clinic, and the Streaming Media team made sure these tech upgrades were easy to use, especially for Mayo’s many older patients who might not be tech-savvy.

In another creative move, Mayo Clinic began embedding patient education videos right into the electronic health record (EHR) system. This lets doctors “prescribe” educational content directly to patients. With these hands-on videos, patients can manage self-care and therapies at home, making healthcare more effective and convenient.

Harnessing AI for improved healthcare outcomes

Mayo Clinic is leading the charge in exploring how AI can revolutionize healthcare. One of these AI projects consists of a recommendation engine that helps doctors diagnose and treat patients.

Another exciting AI venture involves digging into Mayo Clinic’s vast repository of clinical video data. The aim? To develop AI that can analyze medical images, like spotting cancerous polyps in video footage. This cutting-edge tech could speed up the journey from diagnosis to treatment, boosting patient outcomes and making healthcare more efficient.

Mayo Foundation for Medical Education

One of the things we’re excited about is AI being able to suggest or recommend videos to healthcare staff. We’ve also worked on getting our patient education into the electronic medical record to prescribe videos. So patients will get messages saying that they have content that they need to watch.

Personalized, repurposed content is the future of healthcare

At Mayo Clinic, AI’s potential extends far beyond diagnostics—AI can also be leveraged to create personalized video experiences that speak directly to each patient, considering factors like gender, age, and cultural background. This will help make healthcare more inclusive and tailored to everyone’s unique needs.

Mayo Clinic is also finding ways to make healthcare content more accessible and easier to digest. AI helps them transform long, detailed lectures into bite-sized, “snackable” content, enhancing the learning experience for both healthcare pros and patients.

Conclusion

Mayo Clinic’s journey is a testament to how data and technology can transform healthcare. With the help of Kaltura, Mayo Clinic is raising the bar on patient experience and healthcare delivery by democratizing access to video, embracing telehealth and remote monitoring, harnessing AI, and pushing the boundaries of personalized care.
