Learning can – and should – be an anytime, anywhere experience. This is certainly true when it comes to informal education such as the books we choose to read and websites we choose to visit to pursue knowledge on our own, independent of educational institutions.

Kaltura Classroom has been about recording courses for later viewing by students. Lecture Capture Live isn’t designed to replace the main functionality of Kaltura Classroom – which is recording lectures to a capture card for later uploading and use. Rather, it’s about expanding it so that a single class to be experienced in multiple different ways, all with little-to-no technical engagement from faculty. This allows instructors to do what they do best – teach! – without having to devote time and energy to figuring out how to be a broadcaster or producer.
Lecture Capture Live can be used to meet existing needs, bring your educational community together, and increase accessibility. For example, this tool can allow your university to share a major guest-lecture across an entire campus, provide overflow rooms for popular events and classes, give remote students a chance to listen in to live classroom instruction, and facilitate hybrid learning in which students have the choice to be in the classroom or watching the classroom from another location.
What Tools Are Necessary to Implement Lecture Capture Live?
First and foremost, Lecture Capture Live requires some sort of capture device in the classroom. What that set-up is will probably differ based on the size of the classroom and how your institution wants to use this tool and/or how it’s already using Kaltura Classroom. In general, you can assume that auditoriums will require a more complex/high-end set up than a typical classroom.
If you’re already recording classes in the classroom, taking the next step to Lecture Capture Live will be relatively easy. If you’re not, remember that Kaltura Classroom and Lecture Capture Live don’t have to be deployed across your entire institution at once. It’s common for schools to only have some classrooms, lecture halls, or campuses set up for this type of hybrid learning, which expansion occurring as budgets, student interest, and circumstances allow.
Next, some sort of scheduling system – a room management system combined with a campus management platform — needs to be involved to make Lecture Capture Live happen. The scheduling system is told when classes start so that the capture and broadcast of the class can begin automatically. Advance scheduling of what gets captured when means that all instructors have to do is come in and teach. Classes start on time and focused on learning, instead of with valuable time being wasted on fumbling with improvised technology solutions
Perhaps most importantly, Lecture Capture Live integrates with your LMS. This integration provides a way to make sure those choosing to watch live have a way to access the class remotely and that those choosing to watch later, get access to the recording – generally through auto-publishing — as soon as possible. That said, professors can choose not to auto-publish to the LMS if they are interested in editing the lecture.
What is the Lecture Capture Live Experience Like for Learners?
For students in the classroom, a class taught with Lecture Capture Live feels like any other. But because other students who are not in the classroom are viewing it at the same time, in-person and live remote learners are able to discuss the material together or work on group projects as soon as they get out of class. There’s no need to wait for those distance learners to get caught up.
This allows remote learners to feel more included and in-synch with the rest of their class, but it is important to remember that Lecture Capture Live is a one-way experience. While remote learners benefit from witnessing classroom discussion, this is not a tool through with they are able to participate in that conversation as it happens.
Of course, the capture element means that all students have the opportunity to rewatch the class for review, while those who couldn’t attend also have an opportunity to see the lesson and remain engaged with the course.
