Academic Institutions: Don’t Put Out an RFP Without These Key Questions!

Writing an RFP for a video platform is hard. At Kaltura, we see many of them and we’re happy to share some of the knowledge we’ve accumulated over the years. So, without further ado, here’s a list of questions that you, an employee at an academic institution putting together an RFP for an educational video platform or online video provider, might want to incorporate into your RFPs.

  1. Do you integrate with our LMS? RFPs have to start somewhere. Ask early and explicitly about integration with your learning management system (Blackboard, D2L, Canvas, Sakai, Moodle or others). Proceed with extreme caution if the answer is anything short of an unequivocal yes.
  2. Are there interactive or advanced features and what are they? Some providers offer barebones platforms. Good providers deliver more: Quizzes, interactive features, chapterization, comments section, etc…There are many ways of making a video more engaging and these are becoming more varid and essential by the day.
  3. Do you comply with the Caliper Analytics standard? Data often goes to waste. Worse, some online video vendors independently mine and sell it for profit. Caliper is an industry standard built by and for over 500 education entities that ensures best practices for analytics gathering and integration with other tools. Caliper ensures you won’t just see whether a student has viewed a video but how long, how many times and where they paused or dropped off.
  4. What’s your roadmap and how do you communicate it? Tech has a short-shelf life. If your provider is forward-thinking it will keep up or ahead of trends. Just as importantly, it will keep you abreast of the latest with periodic updates. Ask if these monthly or annually, at request or scheduled? Furthermore, as a client you may be able to influence what these updates might be. Take control of your video future!
  5. Do you support campus wide lecture capture? The only way of capturing high-quality content in bulk used to be using expensive, stationary AV equipment placed in classrooms. Now, in addition, or even instead of these, you can add an array of PCs and smartphone to the number of devices creating content. Lecture capture software utilizes the increasingly improving cameras on these to feed your LMS and turns your video creativity up to 11.
  6. Do you support VR 360? Fly your class to Chile virtually to visit a Volcano, travel back in time to Ancient Rome or maybe soar across the solar system to Pluto. Virtual reality and 360-video are immersive new mediums that open up the imaginations and feed the curiosities of students in ways others cannot. A good provider will support this delightful tool of communication and, because it’s still new, show you how to easily and cheaply create and share content.
